Special Considerations for Geriatric Massage

Geriatric Massage

Geriatric massage is massage that has been adapted and uses specialized techniques to meet the specific needs of the elderly. The therapist needs to have an understanding of the aging process from the physical, sensory and emotional to the psychosocial aspects. The elderly can have a multitude of medical problems, it is therefore important that the therapist is aware of the symptoms and characteristics of the disease and common ailments. Persistent pain is also a challenge which can result in depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and physical limitations.

 The Power of Touch

One of the most important aspects of Geriatic Massage is that it nurtures the individual, as well as provides them with a sense of comfort. The need for touch does not decrease with age, if anything it increases. Many residents in healthcare facilities receive physical contact for their basic physical needs. However this touch does not meet their emotional needs as human beings. Touch is an essential part of our lives especially when we are at a stage in our life when we are more vunerable and need social and physical contact.

 Benefits include

  • one-to-one attention
  • touch is a form of communication; it builds trust and relationships
  • sensory and tactile stimulation
  • a sense of comfort and connection to another human being
  • body awareness

 Physical Benefits of Geriatric Massage
