Reflexology

Reflexology is natural therapy that is based on the prinicipal that there are areas called reflexes that are located on feet, hands and ears. Each reflex corresponds to a specific body part, gland, and/or organ in the body. These reflexes are stimulated by using various pressure techniques. If there is tenderness in a certain area that is an indicator of pain or congestion in the body.

Brief History of Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient therapy that is rich in history. The oldest relics of hand and foot reflexolgy are pictograms and inscriptions that were carved into stone. They were found at The Tomb of the Physician in Saqqara Eygypt, 2330 B.C. Reflexology has been practiced in China for thousands of years and was combined with acupuncture. It has also existed in India and Japan.

The West was re-introduced to reflexology in 1913 by Dr.William Fitzgerald who was an ear, nose and throat specialist. He used the name zone therapy and further developed the approach. Zone therapy is where the body is divided into ten zones running from the top of the head to the tips of the toes and hands. Each zone corresponds to a certain part of the body. When pressure is applied to the hands and feet it stimulates the energy to the corresponding zone in the body.

Eunice Ingham was an Americian physical therapist who worked with Dr. Fitzgerald. She further developed and formalized reflexology to the modern world. Her techniques were based on ancient foot maps and zone therapy. Her dedication and passion promoted reflexology throughout North America and is recognized for giving Reflexology its name.
